THE ART OF TAI CHI

Tai Chi has the power to add balance and peace to your life. At Dwane Lewis Martial Arts Academy we study Wu style Tai Chi. It is definitely one of my favorite styles that I teach. Whether you are taking it to improve your health or for its fighting applications, it is truly an extraordinary system that would improve your physical and mental abilities. I believe that the more you study this art the more peaceful and compassionate you become.

In your learning process you will see that there are many different levels of Tai Chi. There is much to know and learn especially about the Qi Gong (energy breathing) exercises and the correct posture. It might seems that to learn the forms all you have to do is to breathe correctly and move softly. This is true only in the beginning of learning process. Performing precise movement coordinated with breathing might seems intimidating even after learning the pattern of the form. Many people know the pattern but have never been taught the actual form. The pattern is like the script of a book, where the form is the finished and published work. Learning the form helps you understand the mechanics of your movements.

Ever wonder why there are so many people of all ages in the parks of the China and other parts of the world practicing Tai Chi religiously every day of their life? This commitment alone should be enough of a reason to make you look into it. Just to watch 80 years old person doing movement that some can’t do in their twenties is quite amazing.

When students are learning to apply Tai Chi to the fighting the learning process narrows down. It is important to have a good teacher who would help speed up a learning and give a confidence. There are truths about the touch of a master. Some things they can do seem to defy the laws of physics. Good masters can explain how they do it and teach to their students. It is not however a system that could be quickly learned. It require a lot of commitment and patience. In Tai Chi many teachers don’t give rank to their students. They are ranked by how long you have been studying with the teacher or master. Once you truly understand the nature of this art you will know why it is the study for the lifetime.
